Late 19th century half maroon morocco, maroon cloth. 5 raised bands. Gilt decoration and lettering on spine. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Overall very good, with an attractive binding. Copper engraved frontispiece featuring author, further 29 copper engraved portraits of philosophers throughout. Engraved tables and diagrams. Includes Stanley's "The History of Chaldaick Philosophy" as of p. 1029. Various pages misnumbered, but complete. Very minor stain p. 180- 181, p. 227. Very small hole p. 169. Very minor, very occasional spotting, but overall very clean and well-preserved copy. Near fine. "The History of Philosophy" describes the lives and teachings of 49 philosophers, including: Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Euclid, Pythagoras, Diogenes, Democritus, Strato, Lyco, Xenophon, and Pyrrho. Thomas Stanley (1625 - 1678) was an English poet and translator. He is also considered to be one of the first - if not the first - historians of philosophy in the English language. "The History of Philosophy" is, as such, a groundbreaking work. Originally issued in three volumes between 1655 and 1661 (with "The History of Chaldaick Philosophy" appearing in 1662 as the unofficial fourth volume), Stanley's series of critical biographies was a highly innovative addition to the scholarship of the time.
