He taught at various universities, studied Zen Buddhism under master Hanayama Taigi, and was intoduced to haiku through the writings of and friendship with D.T. Suzuki. In turn, this four-volume set was hugely influential in introducing Western writers to both traditions, including the Beat poets, J.D. Salinger, e.e. cummings and Roland Barthes.
