Volume one provides the history and description of Japanese papermaklong and is accompanied by an envelope with five different papermaking fibers. The second volume includes 187 specimens from the Nara Period (710-793) to the present day. The third volume contains a contemporary collection of 139 full-page specimens from twenty Japanese districts. The final volume comprises the watermark collection, with 20 pictorial watermarks made by a hand rubbing process. Schlosser states that 250 copies were planned, though as few as 150 may have been completed.
