A propos de cet article

The very scarce first edition of American writer William Samuel Cardell's fictional account of a family of pioneers settling in Ohio, aimed at 'well instructed children of seven years old and upwards'. The vanishingly scarce first edition of this highly unusual piece of Americana.Illustrated with a frontispiece.Aimed at young readers, this work offers the tale of a New England family's migration to and settlement near Jefferson, Ohio.Starting out in the Connecticut Valley he provides an account of the journey to Ohio, followed by details of the experiences of the family on the border. Cardell must have had first had knowledge or interviewed locals, as names are thinly disguised, or not at all. For example, he refers to Captain Warner as having built the mill, and it was actually a Colonel Warner who build the first mill at Jefferson. This title was penned by William S. Cardell, known for his early American children's fiction, primarily his morally educational sea stories, aimed at young boys. Bound in quarter calf and marbled boards. Externally, worn. Fading to spine. Front board weak, and may detach with further handling. Vertical split in back strip. The odd marks to boards. Loss of leather to spine head and tail. Rubbing to extremities. Age toning to endpapers. Internally, binding strained between pages 14 and 15, but otherwise firmly held. Pages age toned due to paper type, with instances of spotting throughout, most concentrated towards the rear. Contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper. Good Only.…
