A propos de cet article

Early 1889 issue of Edward John Hardy's popular Victorian marriage manual, published anonymously as "A Graduate in the University of Matrimony." Title page states "Seventeenth Thousand" and the volume contains the author's Preface to the Second Edition, together with a page of contemporary press notices for the first edition. Complete through the index on p. 278, with the imprint of Unwin Brothers, The Gresham Press, Chilworth and London. Rebound in dark green institutional library cloth with gilt title and author to spine, white shelf number at foot and replacement endpapers. Binding firm and square. Cloth rubbed and marked, with scattered pale surface marks. Numerous former-library markings, including Nottingham Public Libraries Reference Library stamp dated 16 March 1960, cataloguing and shelf marks, and a large BEDS C BOOKNET "DELETED" stamp to the title page. Further pencil and institutional markings are present in the preliminaries. Pages show age toning and occasional spotting. Originally published in 1885, How to Be Happy Though Married became a successful late-Victorian guide to marriage and domestic life. Hardy approaches courtship, husbands and wives, household relations and marital conduct through a mixture of practical advice, anecdote and literary quotation, making the book an interesting primary source for Victorian attitudes toward marriage and domestic culture. This 1889 "Seventeenth Thousand" demonstrates the substantial contemporary circulation the work had achieved within only a few years of its original publication. …
