Between Heat and Horizon (Standard Paperback Edition)
A Story of Systems, Judgment, and Learning to Fly Beyond the Familiar
Book 7 of The Flying Explorers Series
Tamias has learned to trust the instruments.
Now he must learn to manage an entire operation.
When Captain Corax and Strix Caelum accept a long-range cargo contract, Tamias is invited aboard as the third pilot. The mission will take them across multiple states, through changing weather, busy airspace, unfamiliar airports, and twelve demanding stops.
This is no ordinary training flight.
The Aquila T-9 Meridian is faster, heavier, and far more advanced than the airplanes Tamias knows. Its glass cockpit, flight management system, coupled autopilot, weather radar, and integrated navigation equipment can reduce a pilot’s workload—but only when the pilot understands exactly what the airplane has been commanded to do.
Tamias quickly discovers that automation does not eliminate mistakes. It can carry them out with perfect precision.
A wrongly selected altitude brings immediate scrutiny from air traffic control. Holding instructions test his ability to remain organized under pressure. Weather forces the crew to reconsider carefully planned routes. Weight, balance, fuel, fatigue, and aircraft performance must be recalculated at every stop.
Under Corax’s sharp judgment and Strix’s calm instruction, Tamias learns that professional aviation is not about looking confident. It is about remaining accurate when tired, uncertain, or under pressure.
Each leg presents a different challenge: layered airspace, instrument approaches, changing cargo loads, partial-panel failures, diversions, lost communications, and the constant responsibility of staying ahead of a fast-moving airplane.
At the heart of the journey is one essential lesson: the airplane will not do what the pilot intended.
It will do what the pilot commanded.
Between Heat and Horizon is a story about automation, discipline, fatigue, weather, and operational judgment. It explores the difference between flying an airplane and managing a complete aviation system—where every decision affects the next.
Perfect for readers who value real-world aviation concepts, disciplined thinking, and story-driven learning, this seventh volume takes The Flying Explorers Series farther, faster, and deeper into the responsibilities of professional flight.
