Masquerading as a civilian airliner in the mid-1930s, the Heinkel He 111 became one of the most recognizable bombers of World War II.
The aircraft first saw combat in 1936 with Germany’s Condor Legion during the Spanish Civil War and quickly proved its effectiveness.
In the early stages of World War II, the He 111 played a key role in the German blitzkrieg campaigns in Poland and France.
However, during the air battles over Britain in 1940–41, its defensive limitations became increasingly apparent.
Easily identified by its distinctive “greenhouse” nose, the He 111 was widely used by the Luftwaffe as both a bomber and transport aircraft across multiple theaters of war.
Later variants expanded its capabilities, including anti-shipping operations and use as a glider tug.
After the war, the Spanish-built CASA 2.111 continued in service into the late 1950s as a bomber and into the 1970s as a transport aircraft.
These postwar aircraft also appeared in classic films such as The Battle of Britain and Patton.
À propos de l'auteur: Ron Mackay's literary career in WWII aviation history has spanned four decades, with coverage of the Royal Air Force, Luftwaffe, and USAAF being completed in almost equal measure.
