A propos de cet article

Deluxe limited numbered edition (537/500 from a total limitation of 550 copies). Quarter leather with brown paper covered boards. Gilt decoration and titles to the front board and art nouveau gilt decoration and titles to the spine. It is unusual to find books in French, by Belgian authors published in Germany at this time. It occured because Stefan Zweig revered Verhaeren, translated him, and published a study of him with Insel in 1910. Through this, Insel published his work. The book captures the pre-war moment when Verhaeren was celebrated as a European, not merely a French or Belgian, poet, just before 1914 turned him into an anti-German war poet. The typography, vignettes and binding were all designed by Henry van de Velde, the Belgian architect and Art Nouveau designer who was then working in Weimar. He and Verhaeren were friends and fellow Belgian modernists. Van de Velde's work for Insel, notably the famous 1908 Nietzsche Zarathustra, is among the landmarks of German private-press-style book design. Sarkowski 1822, the Insel-Verlag bibliography. OCLC: 15338065. 36 [iv]. pages. Overall in fine condition. The binding has fractional handling / rubbing only. Inside, the high quality pages are in very clean condition. There is a gift inscription from 23rd April 1945 to the half title page. To the rear inside board are some locator numbers and a stamp, although not library marks (perhaps a private library). Overall a lovely copy. Émile Verhaeren (1855-1916) was a Belgian French-speaking author, and one of the prominent figures of the Symbolist movement. Les Heures du soir completes Verhaeren's trilogy of love poems to his wife, the painter Marthe Massin, whom he married in 1891. Verhaeren died only five years later, in 1916, when he fell under a train at Rouen station. The 'evening' of the title reads in hindsight as a farewell. Marthe survived him by many years.…
