A detailed and comprehensive history of Lancaster, with chapters on the earliest notices of Lancashire, the Saxon period, William the Conqueror's suppression of revolts, Henry Plantagenet, the creation of the county palatine, ancient manners and customs, traditional dress, and much more. Written by Edward Baines, the editor and proprietor of the Leeds Mercury, politician, and the author of historical and geographic works of reference. Edited by John Harland, an English reporter and antiquary. Continued and completed by Brooke Herford, an English Unitarian minister. Portfolio of Fragments Relative to the History and Antiquities, Topography and Genealogies of the County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster, 1869. Complete in one volume. Third edition, with additions and improvements. Illustrated with a frontispiece, a folding map, three folding plates, twenty copperplate or lithographic images, and thirty-three wood-engravings and tail pieces. Collated complete. A collection of historical documents and records relating to the city of Lancaster. With titles including: brief account of the early Lords, Earls, and Dukes of Lancaster, county rates and taxes, military musters, fines of values of lands, and an account of the Doomsday Book, amongst others. Written by Matthew Gregson, an English antiquary. Edited by John Harland. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. The odd small mark to the boards. Small splits in the cloth to the extremities, particularly the head and tail of the spines. Light damp marks to the spine of volume I. A 1" split in the cloth to the front joint of volume I. Hinges of volume I reinforced with paper tape. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark and light age toning to the extremities. Further spotting to volume III, with the odd small crease to the foredge. A small tear to the front endpaper. Bound by W. Bone & Son, London. Good.…
