A propos de cet article

two volumes, large format (32cm x 25cm), teg, coloured endpapers, dark green leather, raised bands on spines, a good clean set (heavy item). (1) The Age of Evolution, xviii + 237pp, 101 illus (from plans, paintings, prints etc), tables. (2) The Age of the System 1715-1815, xii + 500pp, 193 illus (paintings, prints, line illustrations). Publisher: Volume I describes the creation of the English gunfounding industry under Henry VIII and Elizabeth, and the gradual move from foreign-inspired guns to a domsetic tradition. It continues with the Stuarts, and the arming of the ships during the Dutch Wars of the 17th century; it covers in detail the great ordnance survey which started in about 1695, lasting for eight years, and which listed, measured and noted the individual weights of some 14,000 guns of which no less than 6,000 were on board ships at the time. It concludes chronologically with the 1703 Establishment for guns and the state of the Navy in 1714. Volume II describes the development of the long gun throughout the 18th century, starting with the Borgard designs of 1716 and 1719, it goes on to cover all the variants of the Armstrong designs up to the Armstrong-Frederick design of 1760, and concludes with the 1887 Blomfield guns. It also covers the"light"guns which made their appearance at the end of the century; the Sadler gun, the Gover gun, and the Congreve carronade gun. AJS: The first truly comprehensive study of the armament of the Royal Navy through the ages. A further volume was announced for publication, however, the author died and publication was abandoned.…
