A handsomely bound work on France's history, geared toward older students in Great Britain. Condition: VG+ BOOK INFO Published in 1865 by John Murray in London. Second edition. Part of the publisher's The Student's series. Gorgeously bound by Rivington's of England in full cherry red fine morocco. Double fillet paneling surrounding a single roll in blind panel. Spine with five compartments separated by gilt ruled raised bands; compartment two with a gilt-lettered morocco spine label and other compartments ornately tooled and ruled in gilt. All board edges tooled in gilt. All page edges marbled. Dentelles in blind. Marbled endpapers. Octavo, 7 3/8" x 4 7/8". Complete. x, 714 pp. A frontispiece and dozens of within text illustrations. The work tells the history of France dating back from 50 B.C. in ancient Gaul to 1852 AD with the second republic and empire of--then--modern France. CONDITION REPORT The book is in just about NEAR FINE condition - VG+ Exterior and binding: Firm hinges and joints, tight text block. Colorful cherry red calf. Spine is uniformly sun darkened a few shades and is a bit dry with slight cracking. Light rubbing to extremities, light scuffing. Slightly bumped and worn corners. Top edge darkened, per usual. Looks quite beautiful on the shelf! Interior: Text block is generally clean, bright and white. Binder name stamped on verso of FFEP. Second FEP with former owner name in pencil. A few light smudges or odd marks and bottom fore-edge corner of pages 659 through the rear endpapers have a crease else FINE.
