A propos de cet article

(DEFOE, DANIEL) [c. 1660- 1731]. The History of the Great Plague in London in the Year 1665: Containing Observations and Memorials of the Most Remarkable Occurrences, both Public and Private, that Happened during that Dreadful Period by a Citizen who Lived the Whole Time in London to which is Added, A Journal of the Plague at Marseilles in the Year 1720. London: F. & J. Noble, 1754. SECOND EDITION of Defoe’s fictional but accurate account of the Great Plague, 8vo, 376 pp., lacks 1 pp. advertisement in front, re-bound in full tan polished calf with blind-stamped decorative panels on front and rear (Cambridge-style binding), red leather labels, gilt spine, from the library of Sir Mountague Cholmeley (1772-1831) with engraved bookplate with manuscript notes (including the date 1829) on front pastedown, Cholmeley’s signature on verso of title page reading M. Cholmeley/Easton/1754; front blank has signature of “Walter T. Stephenson / July 7, 1899;” front pastedown also includes the original catalogue description, and bookseller’s label for John Britnell of Yonge St., Toronto, Canada, pp. 316 & 317 have area darkened by an old newspaper clipping, very nice copy. This work appears to be based on Defoe’s uncle’s journals of the events since Defoe was a child during the plague. On the last page of text (p. 287) of the Great Plague portion of the book, his uncle’s initials (H.F. for Henry Foe) are printed. Defoe first printed this account, anonymously, in 1722. This expanded edition includes an early English translation from French of A Brief Journal of what Passed in the City of Marseilles, while it was Afflicted with the Plague, in the Year 1720 (originally published in 1721) on pp. 289-376 with half-title.…
