THE HISTORY OF THE NAG HAMMADI SCRIPTURES
What happened to the forgotten voices of early Christianity—and how did a hidden library buried in the Egyptian desert survive for more than a millennium?
Discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in 1945, the ancient codices opened a remarkable window into the religious and intellectual world of late antiquity. Their discovery brought renewed attention to Gnostic traditions, alternative Christian writings, mystical teachings, and the remarkable diversity of beliefs that existed during the formative centuries of Christianity.
The History of the Nag Hammadi Scriptures explores the fascinating story behind these ancient manuscripts and the world that produced them.
Inside, readers will explore:
• The dramatic discovery of the Nag Hammadi codices in Egypt
• The historical background of Gnostic traditions and early Christian diversity
• The origins, preservation, and transmission of ancient Coptic manuscripts
• The Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Philip, Apocryphon of John, and other important writings
• Gnostic ideas concerning divine knowledge, creation, salvation, spiritual awakening, and the nature of reality
• Sophia, the Demiurge, the Archons, and other recurring concepts in Gnostic literature
• The relationship between Gnostic movements and emerging orthodox Christianity
• The historical circumstances surrounding the preservation and burial of the codices
• Why these writings disappeared from view for centuries
• How the twentieth-century discovery transformed modern discussions of early Christianity and ancient spirituality
Rather than treating the Nag Hammadi library as a collection of sensational “forbidden books,” this historical reference places the writings within their broader religious, cultural, and intellectual setting.
For readers interested in ancient history, early Christianity, Gnosticism, biblical studies, religious history, Coptic manuscripts, lost scriptures, and ancient spiritual traditions, this book provides an accessible introduction to one of the most extraordinary manuscript discoveries of the modern era.
The forgotten library was buried in the desert. Its questions survived.
