A propos de cet article

Description :

The second edition, the first having been published in 1658, prior to the cathedral's destruction in the great fire of London. Folio (44 x 27.5cm). Large paper copy. 'The first printed book to delineate in considerable detail an English building; an accurate graphic record of that fortunately unique phenomenon, an English Gothic cathedral which was to be reduced to rubble. For size and careful representation its plates were not equalled in book illustration until Kip's bird-eye views were produced, and for artistry and skill not until Malton.'- Adams. pp.[6],xxviii,52,51-210,75,[1],88,[20]. Including 'Appendix in historiam ecclesiae cathedralis St. Pauli' and 'Brief Historical Account of the Cathedrals at York, Carlisle & Durham' each separately paginated & with their own printed titles dated 1715, but being part of the main work, the northern cathedral section not present in the first edition. With a frontispiece portrait and thirteen plates, a number of which double-page, plus numerous engravings on the letterpress, mostly by Wenceslaus Hollar. An excellent copy, the title & frontis with a light stain to upper margin, otherwise clean & fresh. Bound in full later 18th C. calf, gilt, aeg, marbled endpapers, neatly re-hinged, some slight cracking to lower leading hinge, but quite sound. With the engraved Ducal bookplate of Baron Northwick. Vg. [Maddison, Styles & Wood 24; Upcott 698; Millard 17; Adams 8; Cox III, 466; Pennington 1016 &c.; Lowndes 689]. N° de réf. du vendeur 12783
