An attractively bound set of this newly revised edition, based on a fresh collation of the original manuscript, and thereby allowing "a hope to be entertained that nothing now has been left for the diligence of a future editor to discover" (advertisement). Originally published from 1702 to 1704, the work was an essential component of a gentleman's library for the next 200 years. Clarendon's great History has "remained in the mind because of his literary achievement - the fashioning of the most sophisticated and finely balanced history yet written in English (or written for a long time afterwards) - and for an unmistakable rhetorical voice. Clarendon's writings - and his own life - were steeped in the literary stoicism of the early seventeenth century; but in the History he created a distinctive work of art based on a highly wrought style, a forensic dissection of character and issue, and a sense of the depth of individuals' moral responsibility for their action" (ODNB). Like the King James Bible, the work was an important title in the protected listing of the Oxford University Press, which treated it "with the sort of editorial respect usually reserved for holy writ" (Eliot, p. 19). Contemporary half calf, red and green spine labels, spines richly gilt with cross hatch design punctuated with dots, sides and corners with blind roll, marbled sides, endpapers, and edges. Front free endpapers verso with stamp of University of Cape Town Library. Light marks and stripping to leather with a little wear to extremities, neatly retouched in places, rubbing to sides, occasional superficial splits to sound inner hinges, outer leaves foxed, the rest clean. A very good set.
