A very good copy of the complete twelve-volume, stated second ("improved, corrected .") edition (first issue: with initial publication in 1797 or, as printed on the title page: MDCCXCVII). As noted, bindings are three quarter (green) leather with marbled boards and marbled endpapers, with five raised bands and gilt devices and gilt lettering to the spines. The text of each volume is wholly unmarked, pristine. Some minor shelf-wear to the base of the volumes, but the bindings are remarkably strong and solid, with no splitting of the gutters and thus no wobbling to any of the boards. Some incipient splitting of portions of the leather at the spine seams of volumes IX, XI and XII, else minor wear and rubbing/abrasions of the leather at the crowns of the spines of about five of the volumes: unobtrusive, but noticeable. Volumes are uniform in binding characteristics, with dates of publication as follows: Volumes I, II, II: 1797 (MDCCXCVII);Volumes IV, V, and VI: 1798 (MDCCXCVIII); Volumes VII and VIII: 1799 (MDCCXCIX); Volumes IX, X, and XI: 1800 (MDCCC); and Volume XII: 1801 (MDCCCI). All in all an astonishingly well-preserved copy of the complete second edition.
