Else a very good clean & tight copy. 504 pp. With Seventeen full-page illustrations by J. Smit, E. Whymper, and Miss A.B. Selous. Folding B&W map at p.1. With three ALS tipped-in at end, dated 1914, to a Mr Harley, two regarding the war: "Owing to my age, it was impossible for me to hope to get to the front in this war except with some corps like the Legion of Frontiersmen, and now Col Driscoll has promised to take me with him, if the War Office will let him go" and "I suppose I am really too old to be of much use, but / want to lend a hand at the front if I possibly can get there and I am still perfectly fit and can still shoot all right" (Frederick Selous joined the 25th (Frontiersmen) Batallion, Royal Fusiliers, aged 63, fighting the Germans in East Africa, promoted to captain and winning the D.S.O in 1916 before being killed in action on January 4, 1917).
