A propos de cet article

The 1848 United States Presidential Election in Connecticut took place on November 7, 1848. Voters chose six electors to the Electoral College who voted for president and vice president. Connecticut voted for the Whig candidate, Zachary Taylor, over the Democratic candidate Lewis Cass and the Free-Soil Party candidate Martin Van Buren. Taylor won by a margin of 5.24%. Offering a descriptive political letter by a Huntington who signs only with the first initial, which appears to be “D.” We haven’t been able to locate a D. Huntington in research, but the letter is certainly worthy of further research. 4 pp, 7 ¾ x 10, October 16, 1848, Mansfield, CT, Huntington writes to friend Henry. Huntington includes a good deal of content discussing family and friends, but the highlight of the letter is in his discussion and criticism of Connecticut’s voting. He writes of the “dangerous principle of legislating against slavery” and accurately predicts Zachary Taylor’s election. “.I now think it high time to make an attempt to answer your letter of May 20th in which you informed me of Mr. Elisha Hawks death. That news was not totally unexpected but highly affecting. His name will be cherished for his philanthropic disposition.as a pioneer in the deep forests. We sympathize with those who mourn for him. “In the coming presidential election, Connecticut will go it blind. She never gave but our demo[cractic] vote for president. I don’t intend to write politics more than to advise you to avoid associating with any faction found on a single issue. Such parties are always short lived and generally too by disappointed politicians who have nothing to lose, who by distracting the party they have been with, expecting to be rewarded by their opponents. All the institutions of this country, good and bad, seem to be placed upon the constitution, like men upon a chess board to be moved in elections according to the interests of parties. We have and always shall have bad and imperfect institutions in the opinion of some persons as long as the sins.are upon us. If an evil can be removed by common consent, it is well – but if it by the aid of faction by force for the sake of plunder it will destroy the game. It is better to suffer a little than to be destroyed. “Look at the game in New York. The Whigs.will go for Taylor. All the honest fools who vote for Van [Buren], virtually. If Ohio does the same, Taylor is elected, the Barns [perhaps Barnburners and Hunkers, two factions that battled for dominance of the Democratic Party] have the state government next year.& what will the conscientious dupes have gained? They will have exchanged the present law of the land, which prohibits slavery in territory acquired for the dangerous principle of legislating against slavery where it don’t and can’t exist & by the same rule of establishing it when it can exist if protected, thus raising a partition between N[orth] and S[outh] so broad and so high that they can not get over or around it.Who is to blame? “1st the Methodists. 2nd the Baptists aided by.Presbyterians.3rd the Burners, aided by the sympathies of the first two.will have furnished the work & what will they have gained. The South may exclude our missionaries & government (if we have it) be invoked to chastise the naughty Southerners for standing behind the very partition we have erected before them.” On blue paper.
