Volumes 1 and 3 have detatched front boards, other hinges weAk. Illustrated by engraved portrait frontispieces (Vols. 2 and 3). Three separately published volumes uniformly bound. An influential survey of English history, which helped to establish a new standard of scholarship and historical method, including an extensive use of chronicles and government archives (then based in the Tower of London). According to Lowndes the work was later extensively used by David Hume in The History of England (1754-62). As a an ardent royalist, Brady used his writings to condemn the idea of an ancient constitution and inherent rights and laws and emphasise the primacy of the monarchy and feudal system as established by the Norman Conquest. He was also influenced in his writings by the controversies of the time in his role as a politician particularly from the Exclusion Crisis onwards; he attacked the rights of the Commons asserted by William Petit in the Introduction to the Old English History. Robert Brady (c.1727-1700), academic, historian and physician, returned to Cambridge in the early 1650s after some years of exile as a royalist. He held the post of Master of Gonville and Caius College from 1660, regius professor of physic from 1677, and was MP for the University, 1681-89. From 1682 he was physician-in-ordinary to Charles II and later to James II, to whom he dedicated the Complete History. This copy was owned by Sir Charles Wolseley, 7th Baronet (1769-1846) of Staffordshire, who was a radical reformer, imprisoned for sedition and conspiracy in 1820. (ESTC R34414, R19638, R8686.
