"This work is a summary of the greatest literature of all kinds that is or should be read and known by cultivated and educated people of the English-speaking world. Briefly, it has five main purposes: 1) To select the literature of greatest interest and usefulness, whether novels, plays, poems, stories, or works of scholarship and opinion, and whether written originally in English or made familiar to English readers through translation from another language. 2) To "tell the story" - that is, to give an outline or summary of the plot and action of every fiction work and to give the gist or basic conclusion of every nonfiction work. 3) To give the historical background of each book: Who wrote it, and in what circumstances; when it was written and published; what its purpose and effect were. 4) To add any facts of interest relating to the book: Why its author selected its title, what it means, and where he got it; how popular or unpopular the book was when it was published; what characters or quotations from the book became noteworthy; when a play was first produced and what famous actors and actresses may have played in it. 5) To supply a critical appraisal of the book: How it ranks among other works of its kind, and among other works of the same author; how it should be read and understood today." "Literary Treasures is essentially a reference book, that is, a "question-answerer," just as an encyclopedia or dictionary is. It is designed to refresh the memory of those who have already read a particular book; to make reading and understanding much easier for those who are about to read the book or perhaps see a dramatization on television, in the theater, in the opera house; to point up the outstanding features of a book so that the reader may pay special attention to them; to give an adult the information he needs in social conversation about a book with which a well-educated person is expected to be familiar; and to give a student the basic information he will be expected to know in his school work. There is no substitute for reading the book itself. For that reason, every outline shows the chapters (or other divisions of the book) in which each particular part of the action appears. The reader can then turn without difficulty to the desired part of the book and read the section that most interests him/her at the moment. That is only one feature of Literary Treasures that makes it different and superior to other reference works of the same kind.
