Interior with minor signs of wear.; "Dutch people may find the title of this book rather thought-provoking. They will instantly associate the first part of the title, 'Imitation and Inspiration', with the general preconception that Japanese economy and culture evolved during these last decades as a direct result of a successful imitation of Western models. However, from the subtitle it appears that the book is about Western, and in this case, Dutch imitation of and inspiration by Japanese art. This book is not only a token of respect for the cultural and historical links between Japan and Holland, but, at the same time, proof that it is only through continuous contact with each other's cultures that mutual preconceptions based on stereotypes can be avoided. In Europe and North America, Japanese influences on Western art have gradually begun to attract a great deal of popular interest. In general, this interest has mainly focused on Japonism, which made its appearance in various Western art forms after the Japanese ports had been opened to foreign trade in 1854. However the unique position that was occupied by the Dutch in Japan from 1609 onwards, at first as representatives of the Republic of the United Provinces and, after 1813, as representatives of The Kingdom of the Netherlands, justifies a more elaborate treatment of the subject. Many art experts and connoisseurs have indeed devoted their attention to this period. However, they often have concentrated on the influence exerted on Japanese art and culture by the Dutch trading post on Deshima. From the pages that follow it will appear that, conversely, Dutch and other Western arts and crafts were strongly influenced by the Japanese. As early as the beginning of the seventeenth century, contacts between the Republic and Japan led to a great interest in Japanese art and the imitation of that art in the Netherlands. As becomes apparent from the various contributions to this volume, this interest has continued to the present day." foreword by Stefan van Raay.
