Limited to 600 copies of which this is number 23. Small folio (12 7/8 x 10 1/4 inches; 327 x 260 mm). 127, [5] pp. Illustrated with 30 hand-colored and black and white plates, many tipped-in and heightened with gilt and silver, each with a descriptive tissue guard. Numerous illustrations in the text, some of which are tipped in, in both color and black and white. With the original illustrated dust jacket with illustratiom the same as plate XXI "A Costume for the Fantastic Shop." Other plates include those for "The Sleeping Princess,","Daphnis and Chloe," "The Marvelous Night," and "Boris Godunov." "600 copies of this edition (American edition) were printed in Paris. The hand-colored photo-types were executed at D. Jacomet's Artistic Press, the text was composed and Printed at the G. Land Press." (Colophon). Original cream paper boards over cream cloth, illustrated on front cover. Corners very slightly bumped. With original dust jacket. Jacket professionally reinforced along spine, edges and folds. Jacket with some light soiling. Housed in the original paper slipcase. Book is about fine, and jacket is very good. Slipcase with some chipping and bumps. Overall a near fine copy of this beautiful book. "Leon Samoilovitch Bakst (May 10, 1866 - December 28, 1924) was a Russian painter and scene and costume designer who revolutionized the arts in which he worked.Bakst came to prominence due to his involvement first with the World of Art group, which was edited by Sergei Diaghilev. Diaghilev would then become the founding director of the Ballet Russes and Bakst would become the design artist for the company, doing set and costume. Along the Marius Petipa as artistic director, their work would re-invigorate ballet in France with worldwide repercussions.In addition to revolutionizing set design, Bakst was an art instructor as well. During his visits to Saint Petersburg he taught in Zvantseva's school. One of his students was Marc Chagall." (New World Encyclopedia). HBS 68461. $7,500.
