Item description from seller

WATER SUPPLY OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK AN INQUIRY MERCHANTS ASSOC. 1900 HC. I am pleased to offer a rare copy of a report which was issued in a limited edition. When the Merchants Association of New York commissioned this report they sent it out to their constituents with a letter asking that they be informed if the company/individual who received it was not really interested in it. They would then send a courier to collect it as the copies were limited. On offer here then: An Inquiry into the Conditions Relating to The Water Supply of the City of New York by the Merchants Association of New York dated August 1900. This large and heavy hard cover book (6 ? x 9 ? x 2 ? inches 627 pages) is bound in green cloth with gilt titles on cover and spine. This book offers an incredibly interesting story of the water supply for the City of New York and an effort apparently corrupt to force the city to engage a private contractor to provide the water supply. This situation was uncovered by a Commission on Water Supply of the Merchants Association. In light of the complexity of the situation the Governor (Theodore Roosevelt) requested the Association to continue the work of their Committee on Water Supply. Herewith a few words of Governor Roosevelt s letter on this matter: New York will in the lifetime of men now living be the largest city on the globe and we should build a water system not for one summer but for half a century to come a system that shall once for all meet the needs of the future city and be capable of almost automatic expansion as these needs increase. Yours very truly Theodore Roosevelt. The ample text of the study of this question provided in this report is supported with a wide range of illustrations including many fold-out charts-maps & diagrams all safely contained in this copy. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The corners and spine tips of the hard covers have been bumped and worn with some light chipping at the spine tips. Inside the book is unmarked and the pages and many illustrations are bright and clean and without toning or foxing. This book does not seem to have been read and accordingly all the fold-outs I opened (only a few) are in very good condition without splitting or tears. Not so for the hinges which are both torn full length exposing the webbing. There are also other places where this thick book is cracked but the binding nevertheless still seems tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
