This new book is to provides students, academics and legal practitioners with a comprehensive introduction to the broad scope of international human rights law. The practical approach offers an understanding of the workings of human rights protection and presents a useful legal analysis of highly sensitive issues including non-discrimination, rights of minorities, indigenous peoples, and the rights of women and children. The study also presents a detailed consideration of new areas coming within the ambit of human rights law, such as international terrorism in the aftermath of 11 September 2001. The book aims to reflect the recent growth in the substance and practice of international human rights law.
The book is divided into five Parts. Part I International Legal System and Human Rights is an overview of the nature of modern international law, the United Nations system and its relationship with modern human rights law. Part II The International Bill of Rights considers in depth the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Part III Regional Protection of Human Rights considers the role of regional human rights?? organisations in Europe, the Americas and Africa. Part IV Group Rights analyses the rights of individuals within various groups in the areas of racial and religious discrimination, and as minorities, indigenous peoples, women and children. Part V Crimes Against the Dignity of Mankind analyses human rights?? violations in the form of torture and international terrorism. Appendix I provides Sources and Further Research in Human Rights. Appendix II provides the Status of the Ratification of the Principal International and Regional Human Rights Treaties.
