Reverend John Brown's monumental 'Self Interpreting Bible', together with 'The Apocryphia', adorned with steel-engraved plates throughout. This 17th-century edition of Reverend John Brown's important Bible published by Thomas Kelly. The Old Testament, Bound together with 'The Apocrypha: To Which is Prefixed, Historical Introuction; comprising a Brief Sketch of the Principal Events in the Jewish History Before and After the Time of the Maccabees' (1816). With its own frontispiece and title page. Followed by the New Testament, which is bound with its own frontispiece and titled page, dated 1820. In a contemporary full crushed morocco binding, with paper notation to the front board. Marbled endpapers and renewed blanks, with cloth reinforcement to the hinges. 'Old Testament' illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title page and thirty-two engraved plates. 'The Apocrypha' illustrated with a frontispiece and four engraved plates. 'New Testament' illustrated with a frontispiece and ten engraved plates. First published in 1778 in two volumes, this 'Self Interpreting Bible' contains history, chronology, geography, summaries, explanatory notes and reflections to appeal the most widely to ordinary readers. The book at once acquired a popularity which among a large class it has never lost. It has been read widely among the English-speaking nations, as well as in Wales and the Scottish highlands. From John Brown of Haddington, a Scottish minister and author who from 1768 was a professor of divinity for his denomination, and was mainly responsible for the training of its ministers. He also wrote an Explication of the Westminster Confession, and a number of biographical and historical sketches. In a contemporary full crushed morocco binding, with paper notation to the front board. Externally, worn, with loss to the corners and notable split running down the front joint, resulting in lifting to back strip. Front joint is starting. Rubbing and scuffs to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with occasional minor toning and spotting. Minor tide mark to the bottom corner towards the rear of the work. Loss to the bottom corner of K1-K2, not affecting text. Archival repair to the recto of the frontispiece and to the margins of the final page. Good Only.…
