Good condition overall.; Catalogue from an exhibition held from 15 June to 9 July 1993, with 243 catalogue entries from the Carre collection of Japanese netsuke.; "The Carre collection comprises several important netsuke; above all, it is rich in rare examples which reflect the charming taste from earlier generations of collectors in France and Great Britain. The emphasis here may not be on the most sought after, well-established artists, but on acquiring, through a carefully selected group of netsuke, a deeper knowledge of the folklore, myths and symbolisms which are an integral part of Japanese culture. The reader making his first encounter with the world of netsuke is here presented with a brief interpretation of the subject, while the experienced collector will be pleased to notice that we have looked for information in original Japanese sources. The extant literature on netsuke seems to draw, somewhat repetitively, on western sources. Our descriptions are based on information drawn from established sources, both western and Japanese, and we hope they will provide entertaining reading for both the beginner and the knowledgeable collector. It is important to mention that we have chosen a new approach to the ordering of the netsuke, a decision which may surprise the conservative core of western netsuke experts. We have, in fact, rearranged the Carre collection not in chronological order nor by school - as preferred by earlier generations of English collectors such as Mark T. Hindson (1883-1968), who followed the attributions of Frederick Meinertzhagen (1881-1962). Instead we have adopted the order of an illustrated encyclopaedia, Wakan sansai zue, published in 1716. This encyclopaedia, compiled by a learned Osaka doctor, Terajima Ryoan, was very influential in its time and is much referred to in this catalogue. Terajima starts with astronomical phenomena and continues (roughly) with human beings, social relations, parts of the body, foreign peoples, strange peoples, literary accomplishments, entertainments, agriculture, crafts, clothes, tools, animals, dragons and reptiles, insects, amphibians, minerals, Chinese topography, Japanese topography, architecture, plants, fruits and food. Although the scheme does not exactly fit the range of subjects covered in netsuke, it does provide us with a way of ordering the visual world which might have made sense to an eighteenth-century Japanese art lover. A word should also be said about the Japanese captions. In writing these, we have based our style on H. Arakawa's catalogue of the Go collection which was published in 1983. Although not exactly colloquial, our captions follow the traditional method of using Chinese characters to describe art objects and are capable of conveying a lot of information in a very small space. We hope that our Japanese readers will find them useful." excerpt from the foreword by Luigi Bandini.
