Item description from seller

orig.wrappers Minor rubbing. VG. Textual illustrations 27x18cm, 112 pp. Published to accompany a traveling exhibition held at the San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, Calif. and six other institutions between Mar. 18, 2007 and Mar. 21, 2009. ["Jess - To and From the Printed Page showcases art created especially for publication and reproduction by Jess (1923 – 2004), a San Francisco based visual artist who emerged from within the literary context of the Berkeley Renaissance and San Francisco’s Beat culture. Jess collaborated extensively with poets and other writers, and worked with small presses and limited-edition publications throughout his life. His collaborations were as much social as cultural interactions – a way of corresponding with friends and participating in their art. The exhibition features approximately fifty works of art and thirty items of ephemera dating from 1951 to 1994, including collages. Jess made for publication, the books and magazines in which they were reproduced, and several paintings and sculptures. The exhibition spotlights one of the most expansive themes within the work of Jess, for whom the book served as subject, object, and fodder for his collage-based art. These works are based on designing and cutting up printed pages, on translating literal texts into visual ones, and on reading and writing. Whether his work accompanied words or a magazine page or graced the cover of an actual book,Jess had a unique regard for printed matter" - publisher's description].
