A propos de cet article

Orig. red cloth, bevelled boards, front board blocked and lettered in gilt, back board blocked in blind, by W. Bone & Son; sl. dulled but v.g. a.e.g. From the Library of Baron Lionel de Rothschild, but suprisingly (see note below) without inscription. No copies on Copac; National Library of Israel and NYPL only on Worldcat. The volume ends: 'End of Part I.' but this appears to be all published. Acland writes in the Introduction that he set about collecting materials for a history of the Jews in England in 1860 at the 'urgent instance' of John Ingram Travers, (to whom this book is dedicated). 'Among others from whom I sought information was my old friend the late Thomas Slingsby Duncombe. Member for the Borough of Finsbury', who was terminally ill, but wanted a Commission in the Horse Guards for his son. The Duke of Cambridge advised Duncombe that it would cost £1,500, which he was unable to prioritise. 'It occurred to me that Mr, Duncombe had a legitimate claim upon the Hebrew members of the House of Commons'. £1,000 was given by Baron Lionel de Rothschild and £500 by Sir Francis Goldsmid: '. young Duncombe joined his regiment; and in the winter of 1861 my friend died'. Acland compares the liberality of the Jewish donors with the lack of Christian support for Duncombe's widow at a time of her distress - brought on by the profligacy of her guardsman son. On his deathbed, Duncombe 'revised [this book] to the close of the second chapter, as now published.' University College Library (only) holds a 'rough proof' of the first two chapters 'sent out by the author (Duncombe) to a select few' in 1861. Thomas Slingsby Duncombe, 1796-1861, MP for Finsbury from 1834 until his death. He was a radical Whig, supporting the Chartists, and in the 1850s was spokesman in parliament for the Liberation Society, supporting claims of religious dissenters in the House of Commons. James Acland (formerly Ackland), 1799-1876, a strident radical reforming journalist, who was sentenced to imprisonment for libel on several occasions. He was a leading supporter of the Anti Corn Law League and became a political agent in the 1850s; he also campaigned for prison reform.…
