A propos de cet article

Biography of John Paul Jones, a British-American naval officer who served in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War. Often referred to as the "Father of the American Navy", Jones is regarded by several commentators as one of the greatest naval commanders in the military history of the United States"No character in naval history, with the exception of Lord Nelson, has been the subject of as much romance and controversy as has John Paul Jones. Eminent writers as far apart in their first tastes as Alexandre Dumas (Le Capitaine Paul), Herman Melville (Israel Potter), J. Fenimore Cooper (The Pilot), the American Winston Churchill (Richard Carvel), Allan Cunningham (Paul Jones, a Romance), Rudyard Kipling ("The Rhyme of the Three Captains"), William Makepeace Thackeray (Denis Duval) and Sarah Orne Jewett (The Tory Lover) have made him the subject of novels, poems and plays. John Murray employed Benjamin Disraeli, when a young hack writer, to prepare a pirated edition of Sherburne’s biography of Jones; and the authors of Les Cloches de Corneville wrote an opéra comique "Paul Jones," which was performed in Paris. Thomas Carlyle, fascinated by the character of Jones, brought him into The French Revolution. Franklin D. Roosevelt started a biography of him, but was called to higher things. Jones has been the subject of popular ballads and of at least forty chapbooks."Ex military library stock so expect to see light wear and possible markings and annotations in the text. No Dust-jacket. Binder in good condition. Some lighter shelf wear, fading, marking. Boards robust. Hinge movement sound. Edges clean and sharp. Quick flickthrough of text shows few marks other than initial library stamp. Overall good condition. 1956 edition. Prompt dispatch as standard. Many thanks for supporting independents.…
