1888 printing of the first edition of 1886. The book is bound in fine burgundy color cloth with titling in gilt on the spine. Spine has faded and corners are softly rolled. The pages are tanned at the edges. Name of previous owner and date-Dec 1899 on the pages after the first free endpaper. Otherwise, pages are clean, smooth and unmarked. The binding is firm. "With one hundred illustrations by Thomas Nast and others" and "a biographical introduction". Mid 19th century slang with phonetic spelling. Illustrations are in black and white. 504 pages.
