Complete. 83 leaves. 31 x 21 cm. Sefer Kad HaKemakh is an alphabetical compendium of Jewish theology, faith, and ethics written by the medieval scholar Rabbi Bahya ben Asher. Title within architectural arch. Printer's device on title (Yaari number 17). The author’s topics are arranged alphabetically: humility, purity of the heart, patience etc. The book is replete with homiletic interpretations of Biblical verses and Agadic passages as well as the Kabbalistic teachings to which R. Bachiah was inclined. See M. Waxman, volume II, pages 275-276. It was printed in Venice in 1545 by the aristocratic Christian publisher Marco Antonio Giustiniani. Some staining. Christian censors inked out certain words and short phrases. On the title page censor inked out the word Talmud. Photos of all pages with inked out words or Hebrew marginalia are available upon request. Thick high quality paper. Modern full leather binding. Translation of title page’s Hebrew inscription: I, Netanel Sagri, purchased this in the month of Kislev, [5]421 [= 1661 C.E.] The Israel Ntl library has a manuscript with Netanel Sagri’s signature. On the last page, under the censor inscription is a Hebrew inscription, whose English translation is: I have purchased this from the heirs of the honorable, wealthy and prominent Mordechai Puijetto of blessed memory, in the year [5]364 [=1604 C.E.] Puijetto has a variant Hebrew spelling in the Israel Ntl Library catalogue, which approximates Pugetti. [verso of rear free endpaper:] noy volgiamo dire che la Si noy voligamo dire che la morta e unita ella vita Translation: If we want to say that the If we want to say that death is life and life [is death]. . .") Right margin: Gili [possibly a shortened form of a surname (Gilio, Giglio, or Gilii) or a location]. The handwriting is late Renaissance Italic script, aka Italic Cancelleresca (Chancery style) cursive humanistic script. It was very common for early owners or institutional librarians to practice writing or test a newly cut quill (probation pennae) on the blank flyleaves or margins of a book, using well-known philosophical aphorisms etc. to test the flow of their iron gall ink. Inscription of interior Folio 83: • Faint Text: Fr: Hier.º de Genaro de Monopoli de' Minori Oss.ti. • Translation: Friar Hieronymus de Genaro of Monopoli, of the Friars Minor Observant. • Bold Text: Io Hier.º Caracciolo reg.to ff flor.is i9. 28 di 1582 • Translation: I, Hieronymus Caracciolo, royal official. 28th day of [Month], 1582. 1. Inscriptions (Folio 83 Lower Margin) This interior leaf features two distinct overlapping ownership/notarial hands in the lower margin of the left page: an older, fainter inscription and a bold, darker entry dated 1582. On the last page the censors wrote, in Italian and Hebrew: [?Visto et coretto per me boniforte del Asinari?] Ani [= I ]Boniforte de Asinari Fr[ater] Hier[onymu]s Caralus Jaq[isito]r [?Anno ie] 19 [?Jull] 1582 Bottom 2 faint lines in Hebrew: Kinyan Kaspi [= I bought it] [?][?][?] Mordechai [?] [?] [?] In 1545, when this book printed in Venice a fierce commercial war raged. Daniel Bomberg’s press faced a major new rival, the Christian nobleman Marco Antonio Giustiniani, (Anglicized as Justinian) who established his own printing house and began publishing Hebrew books, starting with this one. Hebrew books printed in Venice were bought not just by Jews, but also by Christian Hebraists - who learned Hebrew in order to study in the original language the Jewish texts. By 1549 Giustiniani drove Bomberg out of business. Then Alvise Bragadin stepped in to challenge Giustiniani's monopoly. Their rivalry culminating in 1550 when both published dueling, plagiarized editions of Maimonides' Mishneh Torah. They denounced each other to the Papal Inquisition, resulting in Pope.…

They denounced each other to the Papal Inquisition, resulting in Pope Julius III ordering a mass public burning of the Talmud and all Hebrew books in Venice in 1553. This copy is a rare survivor of that destructive mid-16th-century campaign. . . .
