Keith Hunter Jesperson: The Happy Face Serial Killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, known as the "Happy Face Killer" for the distinctive smiley faces he drew on confession letters, murdered at least eight women across six western states between 1990 and 1995. This comprehensive forensic analysis examines how Jesperson's childhood of severe abuse and normalized misogyny created a serial predator who exploited the trucking industry's vast geographical reach and society's indifference toward marginalized victims. The book traces his developmental trajectory from animal torture to adolescent violence to serial murder, exploring the wrongful conviction that triggered his narcissistic rage and signature behavior. Through detailed examination of investigative failures, modern forensic breakthroughs including genetic genealogy, and the intergenerational trauma inflicted on his family, this work illuminates the intersection of personality pathology, occupational opportunity, and systemic failures that enabled his five-year killing spree. The analysis provides crucial lessons for law enforcement regarding false confessions, signature behavior analysis, and the continuing threat of trucking serial homicides, while examining Jesperson's unchanged narcissistic patterns three decades into imprisonment. This case study demonstrates how childhood trauma, geographic mobility, strategic victim selection, and jurisdictional fragmentation converge to create conditions for serial predation.
