Key West, a small island 90 miles from Havana, Cuba, became the storm center of the world in the spring of 1898. When the battleship USS Maine mysteriously exploded in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, Key West received the first news of the disaster. The island became the coordination point for events that would plunge the United States into war with Spain. The island hosted the largest task force of U.S. ships since the Civil War. At the same time Key West was headquarters for scores of journalists, photographers and artists who recorded a unique and perilous period in Key West history. The USS Maine dead were buried in the Key West cemetery. Soldiers wounded in the fighting were cared for at Key West's Convent Hospital. With over 50 photographs and illustrations, many dating back to 1898, this book offers a revealing study of life on the island and the circumstances of war in the United States, Cuba and many other countries.
