Original full leather with red morocco spine label, joints weak but holding, otherwise fine condition. xi, [13]-260 pp., frontispiece portrait. This is a fairly early English translation of the Koran, but it is not an impartial presentation of this work. The preface and introductory Memoir of Mahomet are both derisive of the religion and its prophet, referring to him in the first sentence of the preface as the "arch-imposter." The Koran is characterized as "The most admirable monument of successful delusion ever displayed by history." The text of the Koran itself appears essentially free of editorial commentary of this sort. Published by Scatcherd and Letterman. OCLC 2211167.
