8vo, pp. [xvi], 344, 336-351; (text continuous despite pagination errors); title page in red and black; lacking the half title but otherwise a sound copy in 19th century calf, rubbed, lacking one label, but otherwise sound. First and only edition. This is a very late work by the poet, critic and hack writer Charles Gildon (he died in January 1724): at the time it was published, he was blind and virtually penniless, but was relieved by a present of money from the dedicatee the Duchess of Buckingham. Her husband, the politician John Sheffield, had died in February 1721, and she would have been flattered by the analysis that Gildon gave to his poem - whilst reprinting large sections of it, as well as parts of Roscommon and Lansdowne. There are two issues of this book, with no precedence; the other has the name of the bookseller J. Morley in the imprint.
