Half title, 4pp cata. Orig. green cloth, blocked in black; spine sl. faded, a few faint marks to boards but still a nice copy. Dalby 19b, Rider reprint of October 1925 in 355pp. First published in 1909. Family curses and spectres haunt this often overlooked work by the quintessential horror writer, where the protagonist falls in love with a woman he believes to be undead. Abraham Stoker, 1847-1912, was an Irish theatre manager and novelist; he worked as the personal assistant of popular actor Sir Henry Irving before taking over management of Irving's Lyceum Theatre in London's West End. He originally met Irving following a review of a Hamlet performance he had written for the Dublin Evening Mail, which was coincidentally co-owned by the father of modern horror, Sheridan Le Fanu, whose own vampire tale Carmilla (1872) likely provided some inspiration for Stoker. After his move to London he was immersed in literary and theatrical high society and became good friends with authors Arthur Conan Doyle, Hall Cain, and Oscar Wilde - who had courted Stoker's wife Florence Balcombe before the two had married.
