Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Printed Document Signed, September 10, 1789, Paris. In French; also signed by Paris Mayor Jean Sylvain Bailly. 1 p., 7 x 11 in. The French hero of the American Revolution awards a gold medal to a member of the French National Guard, a citizens' militia formed in Paris. On August 5, 1789, the Paris Commune recommended the awarding of a gold medal for those French Guards who participated in the storming of the Bastille on July 14. The National Assembly authorized their creation and awarding by decree of September 1.Of the 1,000 or so participants in the storming of the Bastille, only about 100 were members of the French Guards. The lozenge medals, created by goldsmith Nicolas Jean Francastel, featured the inscription "La libert conquise le 14 Juillet 1789" ("Liberty conquered on 14th July 1789"), broken chains, an open padlock, and two cannonballs. The reverse featured a sword passing through a laurel crown and the inscription "Ignorant ne datos ne quisquam serviat enses" ("Do they not know that weapons were given against servitude?"). On November 18, 1793, amidst the revolutionary fervor that equated medals with the oppressive Ancien Rgime, the National Convention suppressed the wearing of the medals and ordered recipients to return them and their award certificates, making their survival exceedingly rare. Jacob with the Medal, allowed him to wear it with the ribbon, & encourage him to increasingly deserve, through his conduct, the honor conferred on him.In Paris, September 10, 1789. / LafayetteCondition: Very good.Historical BackgroundOn July 11, 1789, the Marquis de Lafayette presented a draft of the "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen" to the French National Assembly that he had modeled on the American Declaration of Independence and written in consultation with Thomas Jefferson. On July 15, 1789, one day after the fall of the Bastille, Lafayette became the colonel-general of the National Guard of Paris by acclamation. The Parisian National Guard was an armed force established to maintain order under the control of the National Assembly. It was responsible for policing, traffic control, sanitation, lighting, and other matters of local administration. Lafayette proposed the name and the symbol of the group: a blue, white, and red cockade, which became the origin of the French tricolor.The National Assembly approved the Declaration on August 26, but King Louis XVI rejected it on October 2. Three days later, a Parisian crowd marched to Versailles, followed by members of the National Guard led by Lafayette. The crowd forced the king to accept the Assembly's vote but refused to return to Paris. The crowd broke into the palace on the following day, and Lafayette attempted to shelter the royal family and restore order.Although Lafayette tried to steer a middle course during the French Revolution, he was imprisoned by the radical Jacobins in 1792. After Lafayette spent more than five years in Prussian and Austrian prisons, Napoleon Bonaparte obtained his release in 1797 and restored his French citizenship in 1800.
