A propos de cet article

On Oct. 31, 1838 the editor of one of a local paper (and political up and comer) CYRUS JACOBS attacked political rival David Rorer and lost his life. That afternoon a simmering political feud turned violent at Main and Valley when Cyrus Jacobs ran into David Rorer. Jacobs struck Rorer over the head with his walking stick, driving Rorer to the ground. Both men drew their pistols and fired at one another. Jacobs missed but Rorer's aim was true. His shot struck Jacobs in the chest, mortally wounding hm. Rorer was cleared on the grounds of self-defense. Rorer, who lived until 1884, is buried in the same cemetery. 7 ¾ x 9 ¾ ALS, CYRUS S. JACOBS of Blue Ball, Lancaster County, March 27th, 1837 in which he informs JACOB HALDEMAN of Harrisburg, PA of his plan to relocate to Wisconsin Territory and asks for a loan of $500. Jacobs request occurred six months before his untimely death. Having resigned my situation at Washington for as I think good and sufficient reasons, I purpose very shortly moving to the far west, Wisconsin Territory, where I intend locating myself permanently. From all that I can learn from tale or history, I think this step might be productive of advantage to me, and after due deliberation, I have finally and irrevocabl decided to take it and I do so with but little apprehension for the result.Whatever is good in me, I am resolved shall come out whatever of talent of energy I hope shall be exacted to the uttermost to accomplish my purpose and the result I shall leave in the hands of him who holds the destinies of individuals as well as nations in the palm of his hands. For my experience in business at Washington, I especially in the land laws & land sales, which have been under my eye for the last four yers. I am satisfied that I cannot fail to succeed if I can only raise a few hundred dollars to invest in land. The matter is very simple and susceptible of the cleanest demonstration and what adds to its certainty is that it does not under any circumstance admit of loss.My father in law is, I think, well satisfied with the step I have resolved to take, is convinced that it may if properly employed result in my advantage but unfortunately from the peculiarity of his situation, cannot as he would like, render me any pecuniary service of consequence. One of his sons, Dr. Wm, has purchased property in Ills. to the amt of $4,800.another son, John, has just established a mercantile business in Franklin Co. A third Dr. Edward, who is on the eve of marriage, he has just purchased a small farm. These circumstances have drained the old gentleman dry and I am obliged to look to other sources for the money under more auspicious circumstances furnished me. Will you then, my dear sir, upon my simple note of hand, loan me a few hundred dollars. I feel confident that I can return it to you with interest in one or two years at farthest. I go to Wisconsin, not only as I think, in possession of knowledge & fact.I go with the strongest testimonial of character.recommended from the highest & best to Governor Dodge, Chief Justice Dunn and others. From the many acts of kindness that I have already received at your hands, I feel a great reluctance of asking this great favor, but.I know that, luckily, such one of your circumstances, that the loan of a few hundred dollars to a friend, under my circumstances, could put you to no inconvenience. C.S. Jacobs P.S. Please write to me by the next mail and let me know if you can oblige me. I would like $500 but might have to be satisfied with what I can get. Folds, light toning.
