A propos de cet article

First edition. Oblong octavo (7 x 4 inches). According to OCLC there were a total of four volumes issued but as none of them bear any publication data it is impossible to state which volume this is. Bit it appears that we have Volume One which has been dated by one person as having been issued in 1909 but that is erroneous as contents suggest a date in the 1920s. It is unpaginated [but 80 pp.] and is a combination of reprints of cards that he sent his wife Isabel (along with his whacky comments) and his drawings (which are rather pleasant) with impenetrable text alongside of them in Larz? distinctive hand. Likely the text concerns inside jokes about either their marriage of high society in general but in today?s world they just don?t make sense. It is clear that Larz is still extremely fond of his beautiful wife Isabella. If America can be said to have a fin de siecle culture then surely Lars and Isabell Anderson were its foremost representatives. He was born into a wealthy family of extremely distinguished heritage (revolutionary war officers, friend of powerful presidents, etc). He graduated from Harvard while at the same time being a member of the Hasty Pudding Club, perhaps the most irreverent college club of the time. His indomitable sense of goofiness was even then raising its head. As he did not deem work a fun thing and just lazed about his father made him go to Harvard Law School from which he promptly dropped out after two semesters. His father stepped in again and got him a job with the foreign service where he eventually attained the rank of Ambassador to Japan in 1912. His wife, Isabella, also came from a distinguished family and one of great wealth. She also had ancestors dating back to 17th century America. In the pages of these books she is often referred to as ?punk? or ?pudding? In 1896, while serving as First Secretary at the United States Embassy in Rome, Italy, Anderson met Isabel Weld Perkins, a young debutante from Boston who was then on her grand tour of Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Land. They were married a year later at Boston. Isabella had inherited 5 million dollars from the sale of her grandfather?s shipping business (although it was held in trust until she was 21). 5 million dollars in 1887 is roughly equivalent to 200 million dollars today. Larz had married into great wealth no doubt to his unbridled joy. As they remained childless (one suspects Larz was child enough for Isabell) they devoted their lives to the fervent pursuit of art, architecture, travel, philanthropy and high society. Mainly high society. And travel they did; they traveled widely across the world as well as through North America, visiting five continents and becoming among the first Westerners to visit countries such as Tibet and Nepal. Both shared a passion for automobiles and their collection is extant today is the Larz Anderson Automobile Museum. They built a number of huge and fanciful houses, most of which they never lived in.…
