[William George "Willie" Quaife. Batsman. Oldest centurion. Warwickshire cricketer] When he migrated from Sussex, W.G. QUAIFE settled in Birmingham with a view to a residential qualification for Warwickshire. Like him too, the younger QUAIFE when duly qualified, secured a place in the Warwickshire Eleven to the immediate advantage of that County. One of his first performances indeed was fine score of ninety-two against Surrey at the Oval, in May of last year, an innings which contributed in a great measure to Surrey's one defeat on its own ground in 1894. Though on the small side, he watches the ball so carefully and as a rule takes so few liberties with the bowling that he is at all times a difficult batsman to get out. A smart field anywhere, he also saves a large number of runs for his side

[William Lloyd "Billy" Murdoch. Australia Captain. Batsman. Sussex cricketer] As a batsman, W.L. Murdoch, at his best, had only one superior, W.G. to wit. Though born at Sandhurst in Victoria (in 1855), his cricket was exclusively identified with new south Wales. Came over with the first Australian team in 1878, mainly as second wicket keeper, and captained those of 1880, 1882, 1884, and 1890. A batsman of great watchfulness as well as judgment, and one of iron nerve. Having duly qualified by residence, he has captained the Sussex Eleven for the last three years. His 321 for new South Wales against Victoria, at Sydney, in February, 1882, is the highest score in Australia in a first-class match. As a judge of the game has had no superiors and few equals. Has been and with good reason called the W.G. Grace of Australia

[George Herbert Hirst. Left-arm medium-fast bowler. All-rounder. Yorkshire cricketer] YORKSHIRE has rarely been without a fast bowler, and one moreover of the first rank. HIRST, who fills that positions in the County Eleven of to-day, is a worthy successor of such " giants" as Freeman, Emmett, and Allan Hill - Now only in his twenty-third year, his record short though it is, has been one of marked success. Three seasons in Yorkshire cricket have proved him to be one of quite the best all-round players on the side. Strong in build, with an easy action, he bowls at good pace, with a high delivery, and on a favouring wicket is very dangerous. A resolute hitter, he has been very successful on important occasions as a bat, witness his score of 115 not out against Gloucestershire last year. In the field, too, he is decidedly above the average
