A propos de cet article

The presumed sole issue of a verbatim agency press report of Storrs's tribute, given at a Foyle's Literary Lunch celebrating the life of his friend and colleague, who was tragically killed just a month before. This copy is inscribed with the author's characteristic broad italic nib, "Lady Esher from Ronald Storrs, 12 vii 35," and annotated "Introduction omitted" on the first leaf. Esher's bookplate (by Stephen Gooden) is on the front pastedown. No institutional copies have been traced. In *Seven Pillars*, Lawrence describes Storrs, his colleague at the Arab Bureau, as, "The first of all of us. the most brilliant Englishman in the Near East, and subtly efficient, despite his diversion of energy in love of music and letters, of sculpture, painting, of whatever was beautiful in the world's fruit. Storrs was always first, and the great man among us." In this tribute, Storrs returns the compliment, offering a deft and revealing portrait of Lawrence, showing the deep understanding and sympathy shared by the two men. This short address, with its careful selection of anecdotes, gets closer to unveiling the contradictory "mystery" of Lawrence than many other more effusive tributes from his friends and colleagues. Storrs's chosen moments are telling and beautifully expressed, especially in the account of Lawrence's first interview with Hussein. "How instinctively from the beginning he played his cards when first presented to King Hussein at Jeddah! The conversation was led up to the whereabouts of the various Turkish Regiments. As Syrian, Circassian, Anatolian, Mesopotamian names came up, Lawrence at once stated exactly what unit was in each position, until Hussein turned to me in amazement; 'Is this man God, to know everything?' So deeply impressed was he by Lawrence's personality that he consented to write him the long-desired letter of introduction to Feisal, the letter that made his dream come true; and I can still see Lawrence three days later on the shore at Rabegh waving grateful hands as we left him there. left him to walk from that moment into the pages of history." The elusive and paradoxical Lawrence "hated society but loved company. shy and retiring, he positively enjoyed sitting for, and criticizing, his portrait. in action an individual force of driving intelligence. Lawrence, unaccountable, unpredictable. a phantasm of the living." This document seems to be one of a small number sent to Storrs by Reuters and perhaps passed on to friends. Its slightly rough and ready appearance adds a sense of immediacy, enhanced by the replacement of the "E" type-bar with what appears to be a very early Sholes & Glidden sans serif capitals-only example. There are only minor editorial changes between this version and the one published by the Corvinus Press in 1936 as *Lawrence of Arabia*. This copy was presented to Antoinette Esher, the wife of Oliver Brett, 3rd Viscount Esher (1881-1963), the son of the courtier, politician, historian, and influential éminence grise, Reginald Baliol Brett, 2nd Viscount Esher. The text was published the following year, alongside Basil Liddell Hart's speech ("Lawrence - the Artist of War") delivered on the same occasion, in Lawrence of Arabia, the first book printed by Viscount Carlow's Corvinus Press. Not in O'Brien E101 for the Corvinus Press edition. Foolscap folio (325 x 195 mm). Duplicated typescript, 8 leaves of wove paper watermarked "Perfection", typed rectos only, bound in contemporary orange buckram, spine lettered in gilt longitudinally. Boards a little marked, contents uniformly toned, with the occasional spot of foxing, staple holes at top left-hand corner; very good.…
