Item description from seller

William Shirreff spent 35 years as a learned Church of Scotland preacher at St Ninians, Stirling. Then he did something costly: he concluded that church?state union was unscriptural, resigned his charge, moved to Glasgow, and served as a Baptist elder. He came to see infant baptism as the ?key-stone? of national churches?and he wrote these lectures to lay out the case that had changed his own mind. This is not a pamphlet. It is a full course of 19 lectures on what Scripture actually teaches about Christian baptism. Shirreff treats baptism as a positive institution?an ordinance Christ commanded, not an optional extra or a matter of taste. The rule is the New Testament, not Old Testament analogy, later tradition, or ?what the church has always done.?He insists on positive proof for any practice offered as worship. Inferential chains (Abrahamic covenant ? circumcision ? infant baptism) are examined and judged insufficient. Lecture after lecture builds ?presumptions against infant baptism?: no command, no clear apostolic example of infants, baptism joined to repentance and faith, household baptisms explained by believing members, and more. Then he walks through the New Testament narratives?John, Pentecost, the Ethiopian, Cornelius, Lydia, the jailer, Corinth, Colossae, 1 Peter 3?and argues that the subjects are believers and the mode is immersion.Later editions add a prefatory memoir by C. H. Spurgeon and editorial notes by James A. Haldane. Bound with it is Wolfred Nelson Cote?s Baptism and Baptisteries (1870): a missionary in Rome using one of the city?s great libraries to show that early Italian baptisteries were built for immersion, not for sprinkling?illustrated with period drawings of the buildings themselves.Scripture first. Stones and pools second. One volume for readers who want the classic Baptist case argued with care. This copy: Bound in blue cloth with gilt title on cover and spine. Light shelf wear. Pages crisp, clean, and unmarked. Binding and text block square and tight. Full refund if not satisfied.

Description de la boutique

Since 2005, Shelley and Son Books has been passionate about books, and preserving their importance for current and future generations. We believe that virtue and beauty have a close relationship. By reading we gain knowledge. In knowledge we find things that inform our choices and beliefs. Therefore, as booksellers, we see that books have an aesthetic value and a heuristic value. We specialize in The Inklings, primarily "The Seven'": C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers, G. K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Owen Barfield and Charles Williams. A sub-specialty is our significant collection of Christian Theology. But you'll also find works across the centuries, first editions, signed copies, and even modern books, too, across a broad selection of categories and genres. Customer service is of utmost importance to us, and our friendly staff is always happy to help. We assure our clients books of quality, as each copy is carefully graded and shipped with care. Located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, we can be found on Main Street in Hendersonville, North Carolina, (just south of Asheville). We are primarily an online bookstore, but we invite you to make an appointment for an on-site visit! Shelley and Son Books is owned by Stan Shelley.
