On this doctrine, a faculty is nothing more than a general term for the causality the mind has of origin ating a certain class of energies; a capacity only a general term for the susceptibility the mind has of being affected by a particular class of emotions. All mental powers are thus, in short, nothing more than names determined by various orders of mental phaeno mena. But as these phaenomena differ from, and re semble, each other in various respects, various modes of classification may, therefore, be adopted, and, conse quently, various faculties and capacities, in different views, may be the result.

This book by Sir William Hamilton offers an exploration of the distribution of the special cognitive faculties�"a distribution different from any other with which he is acquainted. The author begins by outlining the three great classes of mental phenomena: the phenomena of knowledge, the phenomena of feeling, and the phenomena of conation. He then provides a detailed account of the cognitive faculties and capacities, starting with the presentative faculty, which is subdivided into perception and self-consciousness. The conservative faculty, or memory proper, is examined, as is the reproductive faculty, subdivided into suggestion and reminiscence. The representative faculty, or imagination, and the elaborative faculty, which includes comparison, judgment, and reasoning, are also discussed. Finally, the author explores the regulative faculty, which corresponds to what, in the Aristotelic philosophy, was called 'Nous,' and to the Vernunft (reason) in the philosophy of Kant, Jacobi, and others. The author examines the historical views of the theories of perception, particularly considering the views proposed by Reid, and highlights both Reid's misrepresentations of others and the ways in which Reid himself has been misrepresented. The author concludes by observing that, in considering the distribution of the special cognitive faculties, no other opinion has been generally held by philosophers than that the faculties are more than mere possible modes in which the simple, indivisible principle of thought may act and exist.
