A propos de cet article

VG. Ex-college library. Has call sign affixed to foot of spine, but label is detaching by its own volition, possibly easily removed. Barcode label affixed to rear pastedown. Pocket and borrower's card affixed to first ffep, according to which, book was borrowed once. Same leaf bears tiny store sticker from bookseller in Boston, apparently contemporary with publication, and price to top corner. A couple of other internal library markings. Corners bumped and frayed. Title label to spine almost 100% intact and still entirely legible. Small smudge to front board. Top corner of rear board has shadow of former stain of some kind, doesn't seem to be from damp(?), not conspicuous. Volume tends to fall open at title page. No names, underlining, or marginalia. Pages remain clear and and remarkably free from toning. This short volume, totalling 78 pages, appears to be a work of notable creative ingenuity. It purports to present letters, written contemporaneously with the volume itself (i.e. starting with a letter dated Christmas 1904 and continuing on into 1905, the year of publication), from long-dead men to each other. So, there are letters "written" by Jacob de Bruck and Francis Bacon to each other, another exchange between Bacon and Shakspeare (sic), a letter from Guido "Guy" Fawkes to Bacon, etc. The letters are written in imitation of each author's own style; for example, the letter written by Shakspeare can be said to bear resemblance to Shakespeare's own writing. Not only that, but the book itself seems to be making some sort of argument for or against Shakespeare in some way. This work evidences considerable research, effort, and genius on the part of Lector. It is tempting to invest a little time into reading this small volume to find out what axe he's grinding. Includes ten of de Bruck's Latin verses translated into English by Lector, a couple of page-sized illustrations "from Bornitius' Emblem Book", and a glossary rendering the letters easier to understand. Intriguing and scarce in the American edition. …
