Vignette illustrations. Two small nicks to edges of front cover; a near fine copy. Susan Hale (d. 1910) was an American educator, painter, traveler, and author of such as Men and Manners of the Eighteenth Century and Young Americans in Spain. "Hale excels in the genre of the personal letter. [They] are notable for their distinct voice, vivid descriptions, and humor; many are illustrated with sketches. The protagonist is a sometimes flustered but always essentially competent, energetic, adventurous woman whose self-reliance and love of outdoor activities defies the stereotype of the parlor-bound Victorian lady."
