22 x 14 cm. 8vo. viii [224]pp. (A4 B-P8). 3/4 tan pig leather with marble boards, endpapers, and page edges. Black leather spine label. Originally published as "A Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue" (1785) this edition is "considerably altered and enlarged by "a member of the Whip Club". Scuffing and rubbing to the leather. First page gathering is nearly detached. Lacking half-title page. Previous owner's bookplate (James King Fesler) on front free endpaper. Does not have the Cruikshank frontispiece; it is unclear whether it was actually issued with it or if it did not appear until a 1812 reissue as most copies seem to be lacking it. Great linguistic time capsule with hundreds of words and phrases which remains an enjoyable read to this day. Some example definitions: "Half a Hog": Sixpence. "Itchland, or Scratchland": Scotland. "Admiral of the Narrow Seas": One who from drunkenness vomits into the lap of the person sitting opposite him. N° de réf. du vendeur 81987
