A highly regarded biography of the polymath statesman, Benjamin Franklin, by the historian and former Harvard President, Jared Sparks. Condition: VG to VG+ BOOK INFO Published in 1853 by Tappan and Whittemore in Boston. Later printing (first published in 1839). In contemporary 1/2 calf fine binding: marbled paper covered boards ruled in blind; spine with slightly raised gilded spine bands separating compartments richly tooled and ruled in gilt and a gilt-lettered morocco spine label in compartment two. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Tissue-guarded plates. Wide margins. Octavo, 9.5" x 6". Collated and complete: xv, [5], 612 pp.; 8 steel engraved plates (including frontispiece). The first half of the work is Sparks' edits of Franklin's autobiography. The latter half is Spark's additions. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jared Sparks (1789 - 1866) was an American historian, educator, and Unitarian minister. He served as President of Harvard College from 1849 to 1853. He was the first pastor of the newly organized First Independent Church of Baltimore, serving from 1819 to 1823. In 1825 Sparks was elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 1827 as a member of the American Antiquarian Society. Throughout his life, he authored numerous historical works. In 1839, he published a biography on George Washington and on Benjamin Franklin. CONDITION REPORT The book is in VG to Very Good+ collectible condition. Exterior and binding: firm hinges and joints, tight text block and binding. Lightly rubbed extremities. Spine uniformly sun-lightened a few shades. Some discoloration and several areas of skinning of board leather. Top edge darkened, per usual. Interior: The majority of the pages are clean, bright and white to gently toned. Heavy foxing on and near the plates; otherwise only a scattered spot here and there. Dark offsetting from the plates. No writing, ex libris marks or former owner bookplates. Light signs of handling like an occasional smudge or crease or feathering to a margin.
