A propos de cet article

The Life of David Hume, Esq. Written by Himself David Hume; Adam Smith Limited Edition by Woodbank Press Written in April 1776, only a few months before his death, The Life of David Hume, Esq. Written by Himself is Hume’s brief and characteristically restrained account of his own life and literary career. First published posthumously in 1777, it offers a concise record of the ambitions, disappointments and reputation of one of the principal figures of the Scottish Enlightenment. Hume’s autobiography is notable for its composure and economy. Personal matters are treated with unusual detachment, while his career as philosopher, historian and man of letters is described without self-dramatisation. The text was published with Adam Smith’s account of Hume’s final illness and character, a valuable contemporary portrait by one of his closest friends. The Woodbank Press Edition Published by Woodbank Press in a strictly limited edition of 25 copies, this is copy no. 2. The text is set in Monotype Bell, the revival of the typeface cut by Richard Austin for John Bell in the late eighteenth century, and printed on Fabriano Tiepolo, a substantial cotton wove paper. Each copy is bound by hand in full leather, with gilt titles and decoration to the spine and marbled edges, and housed in a hand-made slipcase. The restrained typography and binding are intended to reflect the character of late eighteenth-century book production without reproducing it slavishly.
