This is the "Second Edition, Revised and Corrected by the Author, In Two Volumes" and includes accompanying atlas titled "Atlas to Marshall's Life of Washington" (three volumes total). Vols. I &II are in full leather bindings with title gilt on spine and all edges marbled. Atlas has three-quarter cloth binding over green paper boards with title pastedown on front board. Vol. I, iv, 460, 42, viii; Vol. II, 448, 32, v; atlas unpaginated but contains ten maps. Vol. I includes frontis of Washington; contemporary newspaper clippings tipped in at front pastedown and first few endpapers. Atlas has beautiful engraving on title page; includes 10 colorful, detailed maps. Set is in good condition. Boards of all three volumes have moderate soiling, significant chipping to edges and spine; Vols. I & II have cracking to leather and moderate foxing throughout text block; atlas has tearing to cloth on spine and moderate offsetting. This celebrated biography, called "indispensable" by Sabin, was the definitive history of the American Revolution and the development of the United States government, along with being a personal, detailed study of the first President of the United States. Hardcover. Etat : Poor. 2nd Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original full leather untreated binding, of which the exterior is in rough condition. The leather is scuffed and soiled, and also blackened along the spine and edges. Heavy wear is present in the spine covering shows chipping and cracking throughout. Despite this, the book is still in one piece although should be handled with care as movement of the boards may cause them to detach (which is why the condition was marked down to poor). The marbled end pages in front and rear are free of any handwriting or bookplates. The text pages show foxing/spotting throughout and the pages between the frontispiece and page 6 are breaking loose at the top and also show cribbing increasing. In addition, some staining is present and the top of the title page was cut off - presumably to remove the original owner's address. PLEASE NOTE: this is volume 1 ONLY of the two-volume set.
