Item description from seller

This is an early copy of "The Life and Religious Experience of HIRAM MUNGER" - written by himself. 1861 2nd edition; "Published and for Sale by the Author"; Chickopee, Massachusetts. "Including Many Singular Circumstances Connected with Camp-Meetings and Revivals." There is a frontispiece portrait of Munger with a tissue guard. There are seven pages of advertisements for medicinal products ("Useful Recipes") at the back. Hiram Munger was a camp meeting manager and lay revivalist in the Second Advent movement. From the Encyclopedia of Seventh-Day Adventists: "In the summer of 1842 the Methodists hired Munger as camp organizer, manager, and security officer for a large camp meeting near Chicopee (MA). Any 'rowdies' he captured were tied to the preacher's stand where they were forced to listen in the hope off their conversion. When the Methodist meeting closed, Joshua Himes came with a proposal to erect a huge tent for a Millerite camp meeting on the same grounds. He paid Munger $25 to take the same role as he had done for the Methodists. Munger was overwhelmed by the size of the tent, twice as large as any he had ever seen, and perhaps equally impressed that it eventually filled to its capacity of at least 3,000 people." ".the 1842 Plainville camp meeting marked a 'new era' for Munger in which he devoted 'all the energies of his giant frame and eccentric mind' to spreading the Second Advent message. Throughout 1843 and 1844 Munger toured away from home, providing camp meeting oversight and security services and conducting his own revival meetings." Condition: There is a 1/2" x 1/4" strip of cloth missing at the bottom half of the spine. Cloth tears at the cover corners, and at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tight binding with no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Consistent foxing to the pages throughout the book. There is a light, half-oval stain that appears on the bottom page edges through most of the last third of the book. Old name/address written in pencil on the front end papers. "Hiram Munger" is lightly written in old pencil handwriting on the tissue guard over the frontispiece. Overall the book is in Good- condition.
